Chances are most of us are choosing to stay close to home this summer break, but ultimately still crave a break from our day-to-day. Alberta is home to so much beauty & open spaces, allowing for fun local adventures that will still give us that summer lovin’ feeling. Read on for a few fun ideas to take advantage of an Alberta summer staycation.
Hikes & Nature Trails
Not only are most local communities now outfitted with easy walking trails, if you dare to adventure a little further you will find TONS of easy day hikes and paths within Alberta limits. Think Kananaskis, Canmore, Banff – even as far out (or as close!) as Drumheller. Just be sure you do a bit of research before, bring a mask (just in case the trails are busy), sunscreen and snacks!
Dinosaur Provincial Park
Speaking of Drumheller, not only is it home to the famous dinosaur museum, but it also has many other fun stops to visit which would make a fun day trip with kids. It is also home to the world’s largest dinosaur statue, coal mine historic site, amusement park and a brewery. The Drumheller hoodoos, complete with walking trails, make an insta-worthy photo backdrop.
Backyard Camping
This one doesn’t even require you to leave your own home! If you’ve been thinking of trying your hand at camping but weren’t one of the lucky ones to snag a campground spot this summer, maybe give it a go in your backyard. It will certainly help you decide if you are up for sleeping on the ground all night or if you are more of a “glamping” type and should start searching for RV rentals for next summer!
Nanton AB
The drive up to Nanton can be slightly underwhelming, but you will be rewarded once you arrive! The airspace museum is open for tours starting June 3rd. The Nanton candy store is legendary around these parts, and you can always tour the row of antique stores for a special little find.
